How the Pair Reading Works
Wu Xing treats the five elements as a loop of relationships, not a ranking. Two of those relationships decide every pairing. The generating cycle (相生, "mutual creation") is the supportive one — Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth yields Metal, Metal carries Water, Water nourishes Wood. When your two elements are neighbours on this loop, Element Match calls it FUEL. The overcoming cycle (相剋, "mutual restraint") is the tension one — Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood. When your elements sit across that skip-one step, it's a CLASH. And when you land on the same element, it's a MIRROR (比和, "harmonising").
Because these cycles have a direction, the read does too. In a fuel pair one element is the generator and the other is generated; in a clash pair one overcomes and the other is overcome. That's what the direction line shows — "Wood fuels Fire" tells you Wood is doing the feeding, and "Metal keeps Wood in check" tells you Metal is the one applying pressure. Swap who's "You" and who's "Them" and the verdict and direction stay the same, because the relationship belongs to the elements, not to who typed first.

What a Same-Element Match Means
Landing on the same element is 比和 (bǐhé), often translated as "harmonising." Traditionally it isn't scored as the best match or the worst — it's the one built on recognition. Two people of the same element share tendencies, defaults, and blind spots, so they tend to understand each other quickly and rarely have to explain themselves. The catch is that a shared element amplifies as much as it harmonises: whatever that element runs hot or cold on, you now have two of. Two Fire people double the spark and the drama; two Earth people are twice as steady and twice as reluctant to change the plan. So a mirror match is easy recognition plus mutual amplification — real chemistry, and real friction when you both want the same thing the same way. It's shared energy, not automatic perfection.
Day Pillar vs Year Pillar
Element Match needs one element per person, and it takes that from the day pillar — the pillar that traditionally stands for the person themselves. A birth year alone can't give you that: everyone born in the same year shares one year stem, so a year-based reading compares two birth cohorts rather than two people. How Far This Compatibility Check Goes
This compares two people using a single element each, taken from one pillar — a deliberately thin slice of a much larger system. A full BaZi reading uses the birth hour as well and builds all four pillars into an eight-character chart, not one element from one of them. The day-pillar calculation here is the genuine rule, and the generating/overcoming verdict follows the real cycles, which is why naming two people "cosmic fuel" or "chaos with chemistry" lands the way it does. Still, one element each is a thin slice of two whole people — enjoy it, share it for the laugh, and do not let it decide who you pursue or avoid.

- Why does Element Vibe Check give me a different element?
- Because the two tools read different pillars, on purpose. Element Vibe Check reads your year pillar (年柱), from your birth year. Element Match reads your day pillar (日柱), from your full birth date — the position that traditionally represents the person, which is why compatibility uses it. Getting two different elements is the expected result, not a contradiction: they are two different positions in the same chart.
- Does the birth time matter?
- It would, and we don't use it. Some traditions move a birth after 11pm into the next day's pillar, so a late-evening birth can sit on either side depending on the school. We ask only for the date, so we can't make that call — if you were born close to midnight, treat the reading as the coin-flip it is. (A full four-pillar chart also uses the hour; this tool reads one pillar, not all four.)
- What do FUEL, MIRROR, and CLASH mean?
- FUEL means the two elements sit on the generating cycle, where one feeds the other (like Wood feeding Fire). MIRROR means both people share the same element. CLASH means they sit on the overcoming cycle, where one restrains the other (like Metal cutting Wood). None of the three is "good" or "bad" — in Wu Xing they are simply different kinds of relationship.
